Ratatoskr

Decentralized plug-and-play social network infrastructure

Repositories

Contemporary digital infrastructure is becoming increasingly centralized. Major social and communication platforms concentrate data, identities, and social relationships within closed ecosystems, limiting user autonomy and deepening dependence on large commercial providers.

Although federated and decentralized alternatives already exist, their adoption remains limited: self-hosting still requires technical expertise, dedicated network configuration, expensive hardware, and can also lead to significant energy consumption.

Ratatoskr was created to break down these barriers by providing an integrated ecosystem of free software and open hardware, based on ultra-efficient and low-cost micro-servers designed to run personal federated services. The goal is to make personal federation truly plug-and-play, affordable, and sustainable, allowing anyone to own and control their digital social infrastructure.

Through integration with the Yggdrasil network, Ratatoskr eliminates the need for manual network configuration, port forwarding, and static IP addresses. Devices can be deployed and used even behind dynamic residential connections while maintaining native accessibility and interoperability.

The goal is not to replace existing open ecosystems, but to strengthen and interconnect them, creating an accessible and sustainable foundation for the future of the decentralized internet.

Modular architecture

Ratatoskr is not tied to any specific hardware platform.

The software architecture is designed to be modular and hardware-agnostic, clearly separating protocols, networking, and application logic through portable abstraction layers. This approach allows Ratatoskr to run on microcontrollers, single-board computers, and full POSIX-compliant systems.

Ratatoskr therefore provides an open and reusable foundation for low-cost, low-power federated devices.

Full ownership of your social infrastructure

Users retain full control over their data, digital identities, and the services running on their devices.

From the hardware layer up to the communication protocols, Ratatoskr is designed to guarantee independence and interoperability.
